First Images from the Doctor Who Christmas Special: The Doctor, The Widow, and the Wardrobe

It’s Christmas Eve, 1938, when Madge Arwell comes to the aid of an injured Spaceman Angel as she cycles home, in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special, starring Matt Smith as the Doctor.

He promises to repay her kindness – all she has to do is make a wish.

Three years later, a devastated Madge escapes war-torn London with her two children for a dilapidated house in Dorset. She is crippled with grief at the news her husband has been lost over the channel, but determined to give Lily and Cyril the best Christmas ever.

The Arwells are surprised to be greeted by a madcap caretaker whose mysterious Christmas gift leads them into a magical wintry world. Here, Madge will learn how to be braver than she ever thought possible. And that wishes can come true…

Madge Arwell is played by Claire Skinner, Lily Arwell by Holly Earl and Cyril Arwell by Maurice Cole.

Happy 48th birthday Doctor Who!

The first episode The Unearthly Child was aired on this day in 1963. Can you imagine watching that episode and not knowing? Not knowing about the Doctor, the Tardis, Daleks, Cybermen, any of it. If you haven’t seen that first episode, take half an hour and watch it. Its well worth it.

Here’s the Difference:

The Doctor Who photo features a tall, slender, rather alien genius-boy running alongside a medical professional who is smitten with him.

The Sherlock photo……..Oh. OH.

Yes, but Sherlock has a long coat which billows out behind him when he runs.

The Doctor just ha-

Oh.

Never mind.

Yes but Sherlock wears tight fitting suits and is smarter than your average human.

The Doctor’s just—

Riiight….

Yes, but in Doctor Who, the medical companion risks death in an attempt to save the lead character from the clutches of an evil, psychotic genius.

Wheras in Sherlock…. um…….  Oh..

Yeah, but the Doctor Who companion jumps on board to help the lead even though she knows almost nothing about him and trusts him to solve their current problem that wasn’t even an issue until he arrived.

While In Sherlock… huh.

Demons run when a good man goes to war.
Night will fall and drown the sun,
When a good man goes to war.

Friendship dies and true love lies,
Night will fall and the dark will rise
When a good man goes to war.

Demons run, but count the cost.
The battle’s won, but the child is lost.

River Song (reciting in a voiceover)

Doctor Who, “A Good Man Goes to War”

The Doctor: You think I wanted this? I didn’t do this! This…this wasn’t me!
River Song: This was exactly you. All this, all of it. You make them so afraid. When you began, all those years ago, sailing off to see the universe, did you ever think you’d become this? The man who can turn an army around at the mention of his name? Doctor – the word for healer, and wise man, throughout the universe. We get that word from you, you know. But if you carry on the way you are, what might that word come to mean? To the people of the Gamma Forests, the word ‘doctor’ means ‘mighty warrior’. How far you’ve come. And now they’ve taken a child. The child of your best friends. And they’re going to turn her into a weapon, just to bring you down. And all this, my love…in fear of you.
